Sulfur Compounds in Petroleum

Source

The sulfur-containing constituents of petroleum have been of interest and concern to the petroleum industry almost since its beginning. However, only within the last 15 years has any significant progress been made in the identification of these sulfur compounds. This paper presents methods used in the isolation and identification of sulfur compounds and lists, by type or class, the 141 individual compounds identified in four crude oils by the Bureau of Mines-Am. Petroleum Inst. Research Project 48. Based on available techniques and identifications accomplished, suggestions are made relative to methods needed in future composition studies. The procedures described should have general application in the characterization of any crude oil.
