The Use of Slope Measuring Devices to Determine Movements in Earth Masses

Source

The precise measurement of movements in the interior of earth masses is difficult but necessary. During the past 10 years the author has been closely associated with the development of instrumentation for this purpose. Experience gained with over a hundred projects indicates that (1) such measurements can be made successfully and (2) such information is informative, and in many instances essential, to the solution of the specific problem. This is particularly true in the case of landslides where it is necessary to know the depth and thickness of the movement zone if corrective treatment is to be accomplished. The classic symmetry of a circular arc type of slide, for example, is often radically altered by geologic and other discontinuities.
