In the foregoing, incidental to the major subject, something has already been given on the applications of spectroscopy to the study of oils. This is a rather large subject in its own right. The papers in this session are by experts in the field of infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. There is another branch of spectroscopy that has a definite role in the study of petroleum oil which is not formally on the program. I am referring to ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Some reference should be made to that subject in order to round out the program. Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy has some very real advantages and also some disadvantages for the study of the composition of high molecular weight products such as we are considering here. Among the advantages one might cite the availability of good, reliable apparatus at a relatively low price and also the fact that there are many types of molecules that absorb quite strongly in the ultraviolet region.
