A Basic Guide for Management's Choice of Non-Destructive Tests

This paper summarizes the basic principles and essential parts of non-destructive tests and the significant features of twelve basic test methods described in more than 250 patents and about 500 technical articles. The nature and critical features of non-destructive tests are discussed with reference to existing commercial instruments, and the principle of operation of each test method is briefly stated, followed by a discussion of the novel features and applications of the significant patents. The patented test methods have been classified by the nature of the energy field established in the test object, or by the method of measurement, as follows: 1. Electric Current Conduction Non-destructive Tests (p. 13). 2. Electromagnetic Induction Non-destructive Tests (p. 18). 3. Magnetic Field Non-destructive Tests (p. 29). 4. Electric Field Non-destructive Tests (p. 37). 5. Thermal Non-destructive Tests (p. 40). 6. Penetrating Radiation Non-destructive Tests (p. 43). 7. Mechanical Vibration Non-destructive Tests (p. 56). 8. Luminous Energy Non-destructive Tests (p. 65). 9. Pressure, Leak, and Penetrant Non-destructive Tests (p. 68). 10. Mechanical Caliper or Gage Non-destructive Tests (p. 74). 11. Chemical Spot Non-destructive Tests (p. 77). 12. Triboelectric Non-destructive Tests (p. 79). The patents have been classified by method of testing and listed chronologically, and important operating features have been tabulated in 24 appended tables. The technical literature has been classified by test method and is also appended as a bibliography. This useful information has been organized to assist management engineers in their selection of the proper non-destructive test.
