Introduction

Committee E-7 on Non-Destructive Testing of the American Society for Testing Materials regards its responsibility as extending to the presentation of advanced concepts of control and inspection testing to the membership of the Society and through it to industry in general. The present symposium was initiated at a meeting of the Committee E-7 Executive Council held in Cleveland in October, 1949. There it was decided that the technical program of Committee E-7 for the 1950 Annual Meeting of the Society would be the presentation of a series of papers in the form of a symposium, the theme of which would be “The Rôle of Non-destructive Testing in the Economics of Production.” Prospective speakers were selected who would be invited to present various aspects of the subject. The presentations were frankly aimed to capture the attention of management and were intended to present unbiased views explaining the actual or potential values of the various well-recognized methods of non-destructive testing in promoting higher quality or more economical production.
