Effects of Standards on Ski Bindings and Safety

Source

The standards development process has had two important positive effects on the development of safer bindings—the standards themselves and the deliberations that have taken place in their development. Several standards-writing groups have been involved in this process, and, at present, a variety of standards are already in place, both in the United States and abroad, which influence the quality of new equipment. Since safety is not determined by the bindings alone, safety standards must include consideration of the necessary qualities of the entire release system (boot, binding, and ski). The organization, membership, and accomplishments of all groups involved in the standards development process in skiing are outlined in this report. Changes in the release system over the last 15 years and the process that influenced those changes are documented. Current projects, both national and international, are listed and possible future goals are discussed.
