A Quantitative Stress Corrosion Test for Al-Zn-Mg Alloy Plate


The stress corrosion susceptibility of Al-4.25Zn–2.9Mg plate was determined in the short-transverse direction. C-ring type specimens were exposed to alternate immersion in a NaCl solution. It was shown that laboratory temperature and humidity must be controlled to obtain reproducible results. Time-to-failure results for a given lot of material have a normal distribution when failure times are converted to logarithms. Tests were also made in a marine environment and in an industrial environment. These outdoor results for various lots follow the same ranking for susceptibility as determined by the alternate-immersion tests.
