The Effect of Compaction Temperature on the Properties of Bituminous Concrete

Source

The results of this experimental program show that changes in the compaction temperature of bituminous concrete surface course mixes produce changes in the specific gravity, per cent voids, stabilometer value and cohesiometer value of the compacted mix. Specimens of bituminous concrete were compacted in the Hveem kneading compactor at temperature of 150, 190, 230, 270, 310, and 350 F, and the resulting mix properties determined. The results indicate that the compaction temperature used in the compaction and testing of bituminous concrete mixes must be carefully controlled in order to give reproducible results.
