Few materials of unpredictable behavior in use are so widely used as bituminous materials. Information concerning their properties and performance is continually sought, and the technology of asphalts and of the product obtained when they are mixed with aggregates is a rapidly expanding one. The purpose of the papers published herewith is to make available some of the latest information concerning this subject. Sand bituminous mixtures were quite popular and widely used a number of years ago, but probably because of their inherently low stability their use materially decreased as traffic volumes and magnitudes increased. In the past few years renewed interest has been shown in these mixtures because of their high degree of skid resistance. One of the papers in this group deals with the stress deformation characteristics of such mixtures. It should prove helpful to those who are interested in using sand bituminous mixtures for anti-skid applications. One of the characteristics of asphalt which contributes heavily to the difficulty in understanding its behavior is its temperature susceptibility. Few materials exhibit so wide a variation in properties with the variation of temperature over the range in which it is normally used. The effect of compaction temperature on the properties of bituminous concrete is discussed in one of the papers in this group. As bituminous concretes are used in pavements for heavier and more frequent load applications, increasingly strict control of construction procedures is essential, and information of this nature is critically needed.
