SYMPOSIA PAPER Published: 01 January 1960

This Symposium on Hydraulic Fluids was held for a threefold purpose: (1) To familiarize a greater number of people with the objectives and activities of Technical Committee N on Hydraulic Fluids of Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants; (2) To review problems and trends in the use of hydraulic fluids; and (3) To discuss new hydraulic fluid developments and evaluation methods. Since this was the first symposium sponsored by Technical Committee N, its scope was purposely kept rather broad in order to appraise the over-all hydraulics field rather than to focus attention on a particular segment or problem. Therefore, experts in industrial, automotive, and aircraft hydraulics were selected to present their views on trends and problems in their respective fields. Their papers present many interesting facts regarding the current status and future potentialities of hydraulic systems, including such timely subjects as automotive central hydraulic control systems and the role of hydraulics in air and outer-space vehicles. The papers on new developments and evaluation methods also reveal many significant advances in hydraulic fluid technology. The development and application of fluids possessing a high degree of fire resistance and high temperature stability is of particular interest. A new test method for evaluating fire resistance of newer type fluids is discussed. An over-all review of the program of Technical Committee N shows great interest and activity in this committee in developing and standardizing test methods, particularly for the new synthetic-type fluids which are gaining increasing acceptance.
