Statistical Treatment of Heat-Aging Studies on Varnished Glass Cloth

Source

One of the most important recent developments derived from previous studies on the calculation of brittleness temperature of plastics is the revelation that, due to wide distribution of results the usual mathematical average is not useful. Applying this experience to heat-aging life we will illustrate more reliable means of analyzing data statistically for the purposes of ultimately establishing minimum limits. These methods are particularly significant at this time in view of the numerous heat-aging studies planned or under way by ASTM Committee D-9, on Electrical Insulating Materials. ASTM method D 746 describes a method for determining brittleness temperature of plastics which is defined as that temperature at which 50 per cent of the specimens tested fail when a stated minimum number are tested by the method. It is established by testing the specimens at equal increments of temperature over a range including all failures and non-failures of the specimens.
