Impact Resistance and Tensile Properties of Metals at Subatmospheric Temperatures

Source

The advances that have been made in the field of low-temperature engineering demand a more thorough knowledge of the low-temperature properties of metals. Project No. 13 on Effect of Subatmospheric Temperatures on the Properties of Metals, of the Joint Research Committee on Effect of Temperature on the Properties of Metals, is charged with the recording of progress of such knowledge. This subcommittee arranged the round-table discussion held at the annual meeting of the A.S.T.M. in June, 1939. The résumé prepared by Foley (1) of this discussion summarizes in general terms information that has become available since the summary by Russell (2) in 1931. It was the impression of the Joint Committee that still more low-temperature data might be procurable from laboratories concerned with the production of metals for low-temperature service or their application to such conditions. Accordingly Subcommittee 13 was instructed to circularize such laboratories, and to correlate and report upon the unpublished information that might thus come in, as well as upon other pertinent information in the literature not already adequately summarized in the two symposia. This report has been prepared for the subcommittee at Battelle Memorial Institute by H. W. Gillett, with the cooperation of H. W. Russell, S. L. Hoyt, and H. C. Cross.. This group has made the interpretations of the published and unpublished data cited.
