Investigation of Surficial Soils by Field Vane Test

Source

The field vane test has been used increasingly as a tool of soil exploration. This investigation presents a new application of this test—measuring the in- situ strength of surficial soils. Experimental data from 332 field vane tests in a particular group of surficial soils were studied. Results showed that the field vane strength of surficial soils is significantly influenced by their natural water content and plasticity index. A relationship has been derived by regression analysis to estimate field vane strength from the easily determined natural water content and plasticity index values. Attempts were made to correlate the field vane strength and unconfined compressive strength of surficial soils. As expected, they met with little success. It is believed that the poor correlations are due to the unsuitability of the unconfined compression test as a means of measuring the strength of surficial soils and to variations of soil materials used for the two different test procedures.
