Other Abnormal Combustion Phenomena—Are Gasoline Specifications Necessary?

Source

Varied abnormal combustion phenomena are defined and their prevalence and importance assessed. Deposit ignition is the most important problem, and, in spite of a large amount of work, the fundamental mechanisms of the phenomenon are not clearly understood. Many different types of instrumentation and techniques have been used, resulting in a variety of interpretations. The various aspects of the problem and the means for evaluating them are not presently well enough known to warrant attempts at standardizing test procedures which might tend to discourage further exploration.
