Simulated Service Tests of Plastics Parts in a Resin Laboratory

Several examples are given of unusual tests on simple specimens or on fabricated products. These tests were designed to correlate with service performance. Compressive buckling when length is high in relation to cross-sectional area is analyzed in terms of a modified Euler formula. Changes in dimensions and weight for samples immersed in water can be used in designing phenolic parts for wet service. Stresses during use were measured for a seven foot plastic boat. Residual stresses were determined for a plastic filter bowl to determine whether they reduce the inherent strength of the material.
