General Hazards of Perchlorethylene and Trichlorethylene

Source

Trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene are the principal solvents employed in vapor degreasing. This process accounts for 90 to 95 per cent of the trichlorethylene and 15 to 20 per cent of the perchlorethylene sold in the United States. Yapor degreasing, which first became a significant metal cleaning method in the early 1930's, has steadily increased in use and today is accepted as a valuable and safe industrial process. It is estimated that 400,000,000 lb of trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene are used yearly in over 20,000 degreasing units. This section deals primarily with the safe use of these solvents in this process.
