Maser Applications and Traveling-Wave Techniques for Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Source

The phenomena of electron paramagnetic resonance have recently found practical application in the solid-state maser, an extremely low-noise microwave amplifier using stimulated emission in a multi-level electron spin system subjected to a higher-frequency pumping signal. In order to obtain broadband amplifiers, the paramagnetic material is distributed along a low-group-velocity traveling-wave circuit in the most recent versions. The traveling-wave techniques developed for this application appear to have potential uses in experimental magnetic resonance spectroscopy as well. Proposals will be presented for some experiments using traveling-wave techniques which would not be possible with conventional resonant cavity techniques.
