Special Problems in the Determination of Tetraethyllead in Gasoline by Flame Photometry

Source

A rapid direct method for the flame photometric determination of tetraethyllead in gasoline is presented. Variations in gasoline composition are compensated by diluting the sample fivefold, considering matrix effects in the choice of a standard solution and in making instrument adjustments. A study of variations in lead emission caused by different gasoline components and pure organic liquids has been made. Variables due to the burner, mirror, and hydrogen flow are discussed. The pooled coefficient of variation using lead naphthenate as a standard is 1.06. The method is accurate within experimental errors. A new approach using lead nitrate in an acetone mixture is presented and appears to give good precision and accuracy.
