Quality Control and Inspection of Laminated Timber Construction

Source

Quality control and inspection of glued laminated timber construction require that each plant have a quality control organization working closely with production personnel. A plant procedures manual and a quality control manual should be developed to include provisions for checking all production procedures and for the inspection and testing of the finished product.

Procedures should be set up for inspecting the lumber for grade, slope of grain, moisture content, and tolerances of machining. Tolerances for the manufacture and assembly of end joints should be checked. Adhesives, assembly time, clamping pressure, and curing procedures require attention.

The finished product should be checked by visual inspection for appearance, dimensions, and adequacy of glue bond. The quality of the product should also be confirmed by physical tests.
