Major Effects from Minor Constituents—Role in Organic Structural Polymers

Source

The effects of minor constitutive and additive modifications of organic structural polymers are discussed in terms of physical and chemical modifications in relation to processibility, solid state properties, and environmental endurance.

Organic structural polymers can be modified in a number of ways. These include polydispersity of structural length or molecular weight, presence of branched or pendant substituents, interspersion of two or more monomer entities, grafts of different chemical entities, blends with other polymers, and specific, functional additives. An outline of the functional additives is presented to provide a convenient classification of the major effects divided into (1) physical modification of solid state and melt properties and (2) chemical modification for environmental endurance.
