Impurity Effects in High-Purity Metals

Source

The subject of this presentation is one which is not new to metallurgists. The effects of minor constituents in metals and alloys have long been known and sometimes well described, as was the case in the Gillett Memorial Lecture of 1953 by Jerome Strauss, under the title of “Micrometallurgy—The Metallurgy of Minute Additions” (1). However, it is quite pertinent that in the interests of promoting greater activity in the field of materials science—the objective of this symposium—there be a critical evaluation of impurities and impurity effects as an essential prelude to any attempt to formulate an adequate program of materials research.
