Laboratory Evaluation of Nichrome-Foil Strain Gage Installations Up to 1200 F

Source

An experimental program was conducted recently at The Martin Co. to explore the problem areas associated with strain measurement up to 1200 F. The areas included bonding techniques, temperature compensation methods, effects of temperature cycling and sensitivity variations. Tests were conducted on cantilever stainless steel specimens.

The results indicate that temperature cycling has a significant effect on the strain-gage reading under no-load conditions. Possible errors are presented both for the temperature effect on the no-load strain reading and for the variation of sensitivity with temperature.
