Round-Robin Tests on Test Cells for Insulating Gases

Source

A round-robin test of the three existing test cells for the determination of dielectric strength of gases was conducted by Section VI of the Electrical Tests Subcommittee N of ASTM Committee D-27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases. Eleven laboratories participated. This is the initial step in the development of an ASTM test cell for testing the dielectric strength of gases. The test cells are basically similar, each consisting of sphere and plane electrodes enclosed in a glass cylinder with the necessary fittings for gas-tight construction. Nitrogen and sulfur hexafluoride gases were tested under specified test conditions and methods. The test results were analyzed statistically. They indicate that the basic construction of the cells and the test methods are sound because there is no indication that the cells differ with respect to variability of the results obtained. The analyses also suggest some room for improvement.
