A Proposed Method for Determining Percentage of Resin Flow in Preimpregnated Roving

Source

Methods currently in use for the determination of the percentage of resin flow in preimpregnated fiber glass roving for filament winding leave much to be desired in ease of test performance and reproducibility of results. A new flow mold and test procedure are proposed which will permit accurate, rapid, and reproducible determination of resin flow. This mold consists of a two-part steel punch and die with which suitable heat and pressure can be applied to resin-impregnated roving specimens, causing the excess resin to flow out axially with respect to the roving. The flowable resin is thus extruded in a measurable form; that is, residual glass or resin flash can be readily weighed. Preliminary laboratory work has indicated that by utilizing this test method, reproducible resin flow determinations can be made wherein the range of individual values is approximately one-half that obtainable by other methods currently in use.
