Part IV—Methods of Investigation

Duplication of the space environment in the laboratory is an extremely difficult problem. Fortunately the study of radiation effects in order to develop sufficient understanding for confident design does not depend solely on simulation studies. Instead, we may investigate specific property changes due to radiation, keeping constant, or at least controlling, other variables, such as the important influence of vacuum and temperature. The complete understanding of combined effects is only possible when methods are obtained for analyzing changes due to each important environmental parameter.
