Mechanism of Irradiation Damage in Uranium Monocarbide

Source

Until very recently, studies of the uranium carbides have been more or less academic in nature. However, within the last four years the accelerated research for better reactor fuels has revealed that uranium monocarbide possesses favorable physical characteristics and potential economic advantages desirable for a reactor fuel material. Although preliminary studies of the effects of irradiation on this fuel material have resulted in indications of excellent radiation stability, it was felt that further studies should be conducted to establish a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms of the effects that occur during irradiation. Measurements of property changes such as electrical resistivity, lattice expansion, and elastic strain with irradiation exposures were undertaken in an effort to relate these changes with radiation effects mechanisms and establish a basis for predicting the behavior of this fuel material to reactor conditions.
