Mechanical Properties of Plastics at High Speeds of Stressing: The Transition from Ductile to Brittle Behavior


Among the many factors influencing the mechanical behavior of plastics, the ambient temperature and humidity, the size and geometry of the test specimen, and molding conditions have received detailed examination. However, despite appreciation of its possible importance, the influence of the speed of mechanical stressing on mechanical behavior has not received such extensive study for various reasons. These include the high cost of testing machines and their complexity, occasioned by the need to maintain a constant straining speed throughout the duration of a test and the wide range of straining speeds required, including very high speeds.
