Encyclopedia of Electrical Insulating Materials

The judicious selection of insulating materials plays a predominant role in the functioning and life of an electrical machine or apparatus. However, this selection is becoming more and more difficult because of the increasing number of insulating materials, their rapid evolution, and the variety of requirements to be met. The technical information available does not always apply to the use to which they are destined and too often does not allow comparison between different types. Their weak points are described with caution. The engineer who calculates and builds an electrical machine rarely has the chemical knowledge to foresee the chemical behavior of the insulating materials under variable service conditions so he must consult a great number of specialized publications. Finally, insulating materials which belong to the same class but which differ greatly in their properties frequently have the same commercial designation.
