Elevated-Temperature Properties of the 6 Per Cent Aluminum, 4 Per Cent Vanadium Titanium Alloy

Source

The testing procedures and equipment used to obtain elevated-temperature tensile, creep, stress-rupture, and stress-stability properties of the 6 Al, 4 V titanium alloy are described.

Short-time tensile data at temperatures to 1000 F (540 C) are presented. Notched and unnotched stress-rupture data at 750, 850, and 950 F (400, 455, and 510 C) are given for a mill-annealed condition and a high-strength heat-treated condition. Creep test results including design curves showing 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 per cent creep at 650, 750, and 850 F (345, 400, and 455 C) to 1000 hr are presented. Stress-stability test results are given for the mill-annealed and two heat-treated conditions at various stresses and times to 1000 hr at temperatures between 650 and 950 F (345 and 510 C). The room-temperature tensile results obtained on all unbroken creep specimens representing 1000 hr at various stresses at 650, 750, and 850 F (345, 400, and 455 C) were obtained to indicate stability of the alloy under these conditions.

The results show that the 6 Al, 4 V titanium alloy is metallurgically stable under stress to 950 F (510 C) and has good creep resistance at temperatures to at least 850 F (455 C). The notch-rupture strength of both the annealed condition and a high-strength duplex heat-treated condition is considerably higher than the unnotched rupture strength from room temperature through 950 F (510 C).
