Present Practices in Tension Testing of Paper in Industry


Basically, the tension tests of paper show the resistance of paper to breakage when subjected to a direct pulling stress and corresponding strain. This is similar to the tension test of other materials, but the manner of expressing tensile strength is different. For most materials tensile strength is usually expressed in terms of load per unit cross-sectional area, generally as pounds per square inch; but in the paper industry this property of tensile strength is expressed in terms of load per unit width of the test specimen, generally pounds per inch of width of sample. Due to the inherent structure of paper, the tensile strength is dependent on the kind of fibers and the way in which the fibers have been formed and bonded in the paper-making process. The tension test is an indication of the durability and serviceability of papers that are subjected to direct tensile stresses.
