Galvanic Couple Corrosion Studies by Means of the Threaded Bolt and Wire Test

Source

Several years ago one of our associates, C. H. Sample, conceived the idea of making galvanic couple corrosion specimens in the form of a threaded bolt with a wire wound in the threads. The ends of the wire were mechanically attached to the bolt to insure continuity of electrical contact. Mr. Sample had observed the loss of electrical contact and the very limited area subjected to galvanic attack in other types of couple specimens and felt that a new type of assembly was needed. Early experiments indicated that the specimen would give quick and easily measured results on extremely active couples and would be suitable for long-term tests on the less active couples.
