An Absolute Method of X-ray Fluorescence Analysis Applied to Stainless Steels

Analytical methods employing X-ray fluorescent radiation have been restricted in general to either a narrow range of element concentrations in multiple component alloys (1, 2, 3)2 or to binary alloys (4). It has been a supposed requirement that the linear absorption coefficient of the matrix be kept constant for a particular element before an analysis using a calibration curve could be made. These restrictions have imposed limitations on the analysis of alloys to such an extent that the approximate percentage composition must be known for a sample before quantitative analysis can be made by X-ray fluorescence.
