Application of Aerial Photographs to Preliminary Engineering Soil Surveys

Source

This paper reports the methods and procedures employed by the Joint Highway Research Project at Purdue University in making preliminary engineering soil surveys from aerial photographs for the State Highway Commission of Indiana. Soil parent material areas are differentiated and mapped from air photos on the basis of changes in land form, drainage pattern, gully shapes, photographic gray tones, and vegetation. Typical soil profiles are used to give a three-dimensional picture of soil areas. Mapping units imply topography, parent material and texture of soil areas.

It is concluded that the method of air photo interpretation of parent materials is applicable to preliminary engineering soil surveys. Interpretation can be carried on during the winter months so that the maps will be available when parties enter the field. Also, field parties can be briefed on expected soil conditions in advance of operation. It is believed that such procedures will reduce the amount of field sampling.
