Time-Temperature-Sensitization (TTS) Diagrams for Types 347, 304L, and 316L Stainless Steels

Source

Time-temperature-sensitization diagrams were developed for two heats of sheet materials of Types 347, 304L, and 316L stainless steels. Curves were derived from corrosion data obtained by the boiling nitric acid test of specimens heated to temperatures between 700 and 1500 F for times up to 35,000 hr. The results of these tests indicate that these types of stainless steels can become badly sensitized (susceptible to intergranular attack). In addition, these steels can recover from sensitization if held sufficiently long at some temperatures. These effects were studied with the material in the full annealed condition and in a stabilized condition (stabilized by heat treatment). The stabilized condition appears to benefit only the Type 347 material.
