Why High Performance Gear Lubricants at Service Stations?

The object of this paper is to call attention to the need for high-performance gear lubricants at retail service stations. These lubricants, of the generally accepted API Service GL-4 type, are those represented by their manufacturers to have adequate load-carrying ability for protection of gears in sustained high-speed and high-torque service in modern, high-powered passenger cars and trucks. A plea is made for the establishment, through ASTM, of improved methods for communication between the automotive and petroleum industries, by the development of test procedures to indicate the quality desired, which are already furnished in products referred to by such terms as GL-4. Principal reasons for the decision to feature these improved lubricants for distribution through retail stations are discussed.
