Measurement of Dynamic Plastic Flow Properties under Uniform Stress

Source

A technique has been developed that allows the measurement of plastic flow properties under uniform uniaxial stress conditions at strain rates of the order of 5000 per sec. The technique depends on high-speed observation of the diameter of a freely expanding ring having no external constraints. Measurement of the deceleration of the ring provides the data required to compute the hoop stress acting in the ring as a function of time (and strain).

Preliminary results are presented for five materials: annealed type 304 stainless steel, annealed 99.99 per cent aluminum, 7075-T6 aluminum, annealed ingot iron, and Ti-6A1-4V alloy. In all cases average flow stresses increase, although the amount of the increase is a function of the material.
