Application of the QTM-A in the Quantitative Metallography of Specialty Steels

Source

The introduction of the Metals Research Ltd. “Quantitative Television Microscope—Type A” held promise of providing a more rapid and less fatiguing technique of quantitative metallographic analysis than the conventional point-counting and lineal analysis. It seemed worthwhile to assess the capabilities of the instrument. To this end several microstructural features including volume fraction, particle size, and spacing of a secondary phase were measured and comparisons made with results obtained from lineal analysis. Quantitative metallographic measurements obtained with the television microscope were comparable in accuracy with results obtained by other techniques. The measurements can be made more rapidly than with previously existing techniques and with less operator fatigue. Because of limitations of the logic circuitry within the machine, discrimination of certain microstructural features is not possible.
