Surveillance Tests on Structural Materials in Nuclear Reactors

The standardization of surveillance tests on structural materials in nuclear reactors has been made possible by ASTM recommended practices E 184 and E 185. The AEC survey of the surveillance programs in United States is presented. The use of four reference steels as correlation monitors, available through Subcommittee II of ASTM Committee E-10, has been reviewed for existing surveillance programs. The distribution of correlation monitors is listed and indicates a need for wider application for radiation testing. The Yankee Atomic Electric Co. surveillance program for the reactor vessel is described, including preirradiation testing of material, type of specimens, location of specimens, use of neutron detectors and correlation monitors, postirradiation tests, and schedule of program.
