An Improved Procedure for Thinning Metallic Specimens for Transmission Electron Microscopy

Source

The variables involved in electrolytic thinning of metallic specimens for transmission electron microscopy were investigated and the optimum conditions for each variable determined. From the results of this investigation, an improved thinning technique was developed which utilizes a modified chromicacetic acid electrolyte, flat stainless steel cathodes with centrally-located holes and low voltage. This technique consistently has produced uniform thin foils. Typical electron micrographs made from such foils are shown.
