Lac resin, a secretion of the insect Tachardia Lacca, is one of the oldest mediums employed by man to protect and decorate his household furnishings. Pliny, the Elder, in his Encyclopedia, written in A.D. 77, mentions an amber obtained from India. His description of this resin is clearly that of lac.
