The Application of Electron Diffraction and Electron Microscopy in Studies of Minor Phases of Heat-Resistant Alloys

Source

The method of Heidenreich, combining electron diffraction and electron microscopic examinations of etched surfaces for identifying and studying the distribution of minor phases of metal systems, has been applied to heat-resistant alloys. General considerations in preparation of surfaces of these alloys for electron metallographic examination are discussed. Applications of the method to four typical alloys, 16-25-6, Inconel-X, S816, and N-155, are described. Two different minor phases, M23C6 and M6C, were identified in the 16-25-6 alloy, and four phases, TiN, CbN, M23C6, and γ, were identified in Inconel-X. In both of these alloys, the phases present were found to vary for different aging treatments, and correlations between the precipitation processes and some metallurgical properties were possible.
