Problems in the Monitoring of Biomass

Source

Two general approaches for the estimation of standing crop for biomass determinates have been attempted in fresh waters. One involves identification and enumeration of organisms and subsequent extrapolation to biomass from volumetric or weight factors. Several direct methods are available for determining biomass, all of which give results affected by sample size but do not discriminate between types of organisms present. Some examples from current Great Lakes research are presented.
