The Purity of Reagents

Source

The purity of reagents in this country is closely allied with the activities of the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Committee on Analytical Reagents. For over 50 years ACS Committees have been working on specifications for analytical reagents. Many reagents used by chemists bear the designation “Meets ACS Specifications. ” These specifications are developed by the ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents and are published periodically in the book, Reagent Chemicals—ACS Specifications. The Committee which develops these specifications, and its mode of operation, is described. The role of the Committee and its work in a period of rapid technical progress is examined, and the need for reagents of higher purity than those presently defined by ACS specifications is discussed.
