Morphological Analysis of Carbon Black

Source

The particle size and general morphology of carbon black are important parameters in end use applications such as elastomers. Information on carbon black primary unit size, anisometry, and surface area can now be obtained rapidly by direct electron microscope image analysis. The test equipment utilized for these analyses is a special feature specific Quantimet 720 system with a Plumbicon scanner linked directly to a transmission electron microscope by means of a fiber optics coupling. All measurements are recorded automatically on magnetic tape at a rate of about 100 parameters/s. Ultrasonically dispersed samplings of 1000 primary paracrystals of carbon black can be analyzed in less than 15 min. Volume (derived through microdensitometry), longest dimension, surface area, and length/width ratio are among the more important dimensional characteristics. Combinations of these and other parameters also enable classification into nine shape categories using pattern recognition programming. The shape categories range from spheroidal to fibrous configurations and provide a detailed characterization of different carbon black grades when combined with the dimensional information.
