Suggested Methods of Test for Maximum and Minimum Densities of Granular Soils

Source

These methods of test describe placing, vibration, and tamping procedures for determining the maximum and minimum densities of granular soils of a nonplastic or only slightly plastic character, in an air-dried condition, that contain not more than 10 per cent of material passing the No. 200 (74-micron) sieve. These maximum and minimum densities of granular soils are intended to provide basic laboratory references for 100 per cent relative density and for 0 per cent (nonbulked) relative densities, respectively, which are representative and characteristic limiting density states in which granular soils can exist in natural deposits. These maximum and minimum density limits are predetermined by the character of the soil material, namely, the grain-size distribution and grain-shape characteristics of the soil.
