Material Resistance and Instability Beyond J-Controlled Crack Growth

Source

A modified version of the J-integral, JM, is introduced extending previous results of Rice, Drugan, and Sham. It is proven that JM always satisfies the Rice condition; that is, ˙JM must not depend on ˙a. The implications for instability are discussed in terms of the corresponding modified tearing moduli. Experimentally obtained data from compact specimens of a A508 Class 2A steel ranging from ½T to 10T were successfully correlated by using JM even well beyond the J-controlled crack growth regime. Also, the correlation of data from bending and tension specimens is shown to improve significantly when JM is used. Limitations for the use of the deformation theory J are set in terms of new parameters.
