Microscopy

Source

Microscopy of coatings is carried out by the use of light or electron microscopes. Each type has its advantages and Hmitations, and their field of applications overlaps in many cases. Because of the physical properties of electromagnetic radiation, a microscope using visible light can not show clear details of particles smaller than about 0.2 μm diameter. For particles smaller than this, the electron microscope must be used. Ultraviolet light can extend the range of a conventional microscope if it is equipped with quartz optics, but this is not used much since the development of electron microscopy.
