SYMPOSIA PAPER Published: 01 January 1972

Pigments are the fine, particulate solids, substantially insoluble in paint vehicles, used to impart certain properties to paint such as color, opacity, corrosion inhibition, mold resistance, viscosity, and durability. The chemical composition, physical form, and optical character of pigments vary widely. Consequently, knowledge of these characteristics is of great assistance in testing and analytical evaluation. To broaden this understanding, the nature of pigments will be reviewed briefly in each of the following major classes.
