Relationship Between Microstructure and Properties in Stainless Steels

A review has been presented of the structure-property relationships in the major types of stainless steels, including the 12Cr transformable steels, the 17-25Cr ferritic steels, and the austenitic stainless steels. Quantitative relationships have been presented between microstructural parameters and the various mechanical properties that they control. Recent work on structure-property relationships in 12Cr steels have been summarized. Particular attention has been paid to the factors that describe the strength, toughness, and formability of the ferritic stainless steels, and attention has also been focused on the relationships that can be used to optimize the formability of the austenitic stainless steels, with particular reference to the stability of the austenite during straining.
