Fire Performance of Reinforced Concrete Columns


To develop general methods for the prediction of the fire resistance of reinforced concrete columns, experimental and theoretical studies were carried out. Results obtained in the first phase of the study, which involved the testing of twelve columns, are given. Of the variables studied in this phase, load, cross-section size, and type of aggregate had the largest influence on the fire resistance of the columns. The influence of concrete moisture content was, within the range studied, insignificant. Column temperatures, deformations, and fire resistance, calculated using a mathematical model, were in good agreement with those measured. The variables that will be studied in a second phase study are outlined.
